I was being hypnotized by a stage hypnotist, but instead of actually doing what he said, I felt strange. Why?

There was a stage hypnotist at our school and I offered to be one of the people on stage. I was really nervous (about being hypnotized and being in front of a lot of people) so my heart rate was pretty high. Another person who I talked to was also really nervous, but she got really into it and was pretty hypnotized.
What happened to me though, was weird, and I’m confused. I went up and I started feeling calmer, but my heart rate wouldn’t settle down. He told us to close our eyes and imagine that we were on a beach, but once he started telling us what to do, I wasn’t compelled to do anything he was saying. The only thing I felt when he was describing the beach was a weird hollow feeling that scared me and then my chair felt like it was spinning. I eventually gave up trying, as I did want to be hypnotized even though I was nervous, and so I sat down and watched the rest.
After I sat down people told me that I randomly let my head fall and seemed asleep, and I was the only one. I remember doing that, but I thought that everyone else was doing it. I wasn’t really asleep, as my eyes were fluttering badly. They also said that I randomly looked up to look at the audience. I also remember that, but they described it as stranger then it actually was. He tried to make me fall asleep again put it didn’t work.

What happened? Was I slightly hypnotized or something else? And why? Was it due to my nervousness?
I really wanted to be hypnotized, but this didn’t work out.

Hi there, Pure and simple you were resisting the suggestion to go to any level of Hypnosis for any length of time. People will resist subconsciously even though consciously they want to do it because there is a degree of fear associated with the process. That fear might come from the environment you were in or a number of reasons. The biggest reason people resist is because they fear loosing control or not being able to return to a so called normal state. It is critical to be comfortable with the process and understand that Hypnosis is a 100%consent state of mind and you will be in complete control of your actions. It is the Hypnotist job to instill this confidence in the subject.

What happened was you did enter a very light state of Hypnosis and yes you brought yourself right back because you wanted to, Probably just not comfortable, as I said it is the Hypnotist’s job to instill the confidence level and people have different levels of confidence. This is proof that you are in complete control of the process. You were able to bring yourself right back.

Actually it did work out, you went under and came right back. You would probably be a good subject under different circumstances. Those might be a one on one environment with a Certified Hypnosis Therapist such as myself. Stage hypnosis may not be for you.

Hypnosis is a wonderful way to create positive changes in your life.

Sincerely,

Jay
